Childrens Eye Care in Garstang
Many parents assume that their child will have their vision checked at school, but this is not always the case. Parents are not always aware that they should take their child for a sight test at an optometrists at least every two years, and that this is funded by the NHS. Having good vision from an early age is very important for educational, social and functional development.
Will my child need glasses after a sight test?
Most likely not. If every child had a sight test, only a small minority would need glasses. Parents often wait until they are aware of a problem with the child's vision, or if the child mentions it. In these cases glasses are sometimes necessary to correct the child's vision. Overlooking this does not mean you are a bad parent, it is just another of the many challenges of raising children.

If my child seems fine, why should they have a sight test?
Children may not realise when their vision is poor and are less likely to mention visual problems. In particular a lazy eye, known as Amblyopia, can often go undetected for years, as the "good" eye does most of the work. Sometimes parents will notice the lazy eye turns in or out, but this is not always easy to see. If not corrected, the lazy eye will not develop to its full potential, and the child will always have worse vision in that eye. However, when detected early enough and corrected, in most cases the lazy eye will catch up to the good eye. Amblyopia is one of many reasons why a routine sight test can help a child take full advantage of good eyesight. If all is healthy, parents then have peace of mind. It costs nothing but a few minutes of your time.
What if my child needs glasses?
Glasses can be fun! We do our best to ensure that if your child needs glasses the whole experience is as comfortable as possible. Often when they wear glasses for the first time, they realise what they have been missing. Wearing spectacles is often seen as a positive statement, and many children want to wear glasses when there is no need. After the sight test, we will issue an NHS voucher, which pays towards a pair of glasses. We keep in stock a good range of frames that cost nothing with an NHS voucher, and the lenses are usually covered also. In most cases there is nothing to pay, but we also carry a range of designer named frames, where the more basic frames just won't do! You also have the option to upgrade to protective lenses. These are very impact resistant, lighter in weight, and protect your child's eyes from Ultra-Violet rays.
